how do i do what i do...
for most of the work shown in the galleries of
this site i used a developing inking style which i am still exploring. most of the images began with solid draughtsmanship,
i like to draw in ink and pencil but most of these illustrations began with pencil. I like to keep some of the expressive
nature of the pencil lines alive, to do so i use my trusty Rapidograph pen to ink in each and every pencil line, which creates
a more abstract image to work with. each ink line is developed independently of the overall image, line weight and line
interaction is the focus.
after the black and white inking is done i make
a master copy for future use and possible variations. the color inking is done with mostly Windsor Newton inks, applies
with a brush and maybe a touch of water from time to time. the inks are much more brilliant than watercolor and much
less forgiving, providing a fun challenge every time. my coloring is more expresionistic than realistic, i stick to
more realistic tones with expressionistic colors; it's just more fun to play, the bright inks create exciting interactions
between the colors.
